THE HOUSE · −1 FT

I · The House

The house was never built. It was uncovered. Certain doors stand where doors have always stood. This one opens at dusk. The house keeps candles, cards, and company. It has kept them longer than the street outside has had a name.

II · The Keeping

I keep the house. I have kept it long enough that the keeping is mutual. The cellar holds what the cellar holds. Some of it sleeps in oak. Some of it wakes this year. Nothing is poured before it is willing.

III · The Company

The company is chosen, not gathered. Readers. Riders. The politely furious. Those who wear black to weddings and mean it kindly. Bring your dead and your appetite. The house has seats for both.

Some doors open only for those who break things politely.

THE POURS · −2 FT

The Pours

Six are kept. Each has its card. The cards do not lie, but they are permitted to tease.

THE TAVERN · −4 FT

The Tavern

A room is being prepared in Oakland. Candlelight. Vinyl on the turntable, not the floor. High pews for low conversation. The doors are not open. When they open, it will not be quietly.

THE CIRCLE · −5 FT

The Circle

The house keeps a book club. It is called the Circle, and it convenes when the doors open. The first text is to be divined. Sign the Book below and name yourself a reader. The Circle will find you.

THE BOOK · −6 FT ☠

The Book

The Book keeps names. Leave yours and the house will write when there is something worth reading. It does not write often. That is a feature of the house.
